Crafting on the Road

Check out our crochet projects!

Before we left on our trip, I knew we'd have a few long days on the road and a week in a Oklahoma hotel (while Henry participated in a robotics competition/conference). I wanted something crafty for Jessica and I to do that would travel well yet keep us entertained.

Jessica selected the yarn colors and pattern before we left. While in Oklahoma, I spent a couple of mornings teaching her to crochet - and she's making great progress! We started with chaining and moved on to double-crochet.

While I work on the granny squares, she is now working on a scarf.

Here's a link to the Calypso Afghan pattern on Lion Brand's website: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90090AD.html

I'm a big fan of Red Heart yarn - durable, inexpensive and no lot numbers (so easy to find more of the EXACT same color).

We'll need about 30 squares for the full afghan but here's what we have so far.

What Worked Well:
  • Getting all of the needed supplies together well before the trip and packing it all in the same bag.
  • Selecting an afghan pattern that is crocheted in pieces - so that when I'm working on it in the car, it is much easier to maneuver.
What I'd Do Differently Next Time
  • Print out the pattern before leaving. I have access to it via my ipad/iphone but it's just not the same as having a printed copy.
